Hey everyone! For this holiday season we are donating gifts to the Polinsky Children’s Center. This is the local San Diego emergency shelter for children who cannot remain at home as a result of abuse or neglect.
How is Complete Family Vision Care of San Diego Making a Difference?
Complete Family Vision Care doctors, Dr. White and Dr. Geller have given free eye exams and glasses to these children for the last few months and now we want to take it a step further by providing them holiday gifts.
We want to give back to our community and give these wonderful children a smile for the holidays. They are all so precious and it is heart breaking to think about their unfortunate situation.
How Can You Make a Difference?
Below is a list of suggested holiday gifts that the Polinsky children have requested. If you can help out, please drop off the gifts at our office before Christmas, or mail gifts to Complete Family Vision Care - 5075 Ruffin Rd. Ste B. San Diego CA, 92123.
Just stop by our eye care practice anytime before Christmas to drop off your holiday gifts. We will have donation boxes set up.
Every child deserves a gift during the holidays and Dr. Geller, Dr. White and our staff will personally deliver all the gifts.
Did you know studies show that 25% of all students suffer from vision problems that have not be found by a doctor? But when it comes to juvenile delinquents, 70% have vision problems that are undiagnosed.
You may notice that your eyes feel pretty dry and gritty living here in San Diego and for that you are not alone. I would say about 50% of my patients have dry eye and out of that 50% I am able to treat 100% of them.
Dry eye occurs when there is a poor tear film that covers the cornea, the most sensitive tissue in our body. If you do not have a good tear film your eyes will feel dry, gritty, sandy, and painful.
Why Does San Diego Make My Eyes Dry?
Dry eye is caused by 2 main factors – your bodies anatomy and physiology and your environment. When looking into the environment we must look at the weather and climate.
Diabetes can make you permanently blind. Do you know your own blood sugar levels or if you are at risk for diabetes? My goal here today is to be short and sweet. I am here to give you facts and solutions, not bore you with stuff.
What is diabetes?
The abnormal metabolism of sugar, carbohydrates and fats leading to excess glucose in the blood that the body cannot handle.
Diabetes is commonly caused by a lack of, or poor ability of a chemical called “insulin” to do its job. Insulin transports glucose (sugar) out of our blood stream. In diabetes that doesn’t happen nearly as efficiently as it should.
Type 1 diabetes (results from β-cell destruction, usually leading to absolute insulin deficiency)
Type 2 diabetes (results from a progressive insulin secretory defect)
I saw a really interesting info-graphic in the Huffington Post today about how sunlight effects your eyes. I am happy to say that their analysis is spot on. What I really liked was the image they made to depict this, and I really wanted to share it with all my patients.
Also, in this blog post I run through 4 different scenarios that I have personally encountered as an optometrist. All the scenarios show how sunlight effects your eyes!
